Zygomatic Implants — When There's Barely Any Bone Left

Zygomatic implants are the heavy hitters of the implant world. Instead of going into the jawbone, these extra-long implants anchor all the way up into your cheekbone (the zygoma — hence the name). The cheekbone is incredibly dense and strong, making it a perfect anchor when the upper jaw has almost no usable bone left. This technique was once used mainly for cancer patients or severe trauma cases, but today it's a powerful tool for patients with extreme bone loss who want implants without years of bone grafting procedures.

 Benefits:
• Gives implant options to patients with severe upper jaw bone loss
• Avoids extensive bone grafting, saving months of waiting
• Can often be combined with regular or pterygoid implants for a full-arch solution

 Risks:
• Highly specialized — only certain trained surgeons perform this procedure
• More complex surgery with a longer recovery than standard implants
• Rare risks include sinus complications or discomfort near the cheek area
• Requires very detailed 3D imaging and treatment planning beforehand

Alternatives:
Pterygoid implants may work if there's some remaining bone in the back of the upper jaw. For patients unwilling to pursue implants, a well-fitted upper overdenture or conventional denture remains a functional option.
